Create your self

I have recently been attending "Art and Soul" workshops over five Friday mornings with the lovely Sally Swain and a group of other art and soulies. We get together in a cute and quirky space in Glebe and meditate, write, dance, draw, paint, collage, make music, eat cake and drink tea. Such a wonderful thing to do and it seems an indulgence but why? Why is it so hard to take the time to just play and do fun things with no specific purpose? Maybe it is the time thing. Do we really not have the time? Or do we choose to do other things with it. More purposeful, useful, serious things. I recommend doing something that is fun for you but holds no speciic purpose. It is nourishing and fun.

Also from these playful times we often create something which holds deep meaning for us and which we did not know was waiting there to be found in a quiet moment. Playing or working (if you want to make it seem more purposeful) like this reveals something of what is going on inside ourselves. The process of just playing around with some creative medium allows some of our inner self to be exposed so it can be a little scary but it is also very affirming. It should be done in a safe space or perhaps alone because what comes out can make us feel vulnerable but it helps us to know ourselves a bit better.

We can learn some of what is going on in our subconscious mind through this type of exploration and it makes us feel heard or understood. As I said it is a very nourishing thing to do. It is also energising and it gives rise to happiness and further creativity. Creativity which can be applied to all areas of our lives. It makes our mind more open and flexible and thus brings light into our daily life.

So if there is some quiet little yearning inside for creative expression in whatever form that may take, I encourage you to find a tiny window, a safe space and allow it to take shape in whatever way it does. There are no rules and there is no need to produce anything fabulous. You do not need to show it or play it or sing it or dance it for anybody else if you don't want to. But you may find that you do want to and when you choose the right audience, the right person, it will bring you closer together as you reveal a little bit of your inner self. How wonderful.

With love for a creative weekend,
K.xx
