Friends

Hello Lovelies,

I have just finished reading "Last seen in Lhasa" by journalist Claire Scobie. A beautiful book about friendship, personal and spiritual growth and Tibet. It was published back in 2006 but I only recently came across it after reading Claire's blog for writing tips which is here http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CBwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fclairescobie.com%2Fblog&ei=1AboU6vkFsrc8AWVuYHQBw&usg=AFQjCNGIJJBOG9ZL7cMbYLfai1Oe-mJ6xg&sig2=ZDejleIUrwFS1EKmD27tog&bvm=bv.72676100,d.dGc

Wow, that looks long and complicated, hope I have copied it correctly.

Anyway, at the start of the book are a few beautiful quotes which I have read and re-read as I moved through the book. Here they are;

"Each friend represents a world in us, a world not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born." Anais Nin.

"We close ourselves off from Eden in order to live the common-sense life and then find ways of escaping from that when it becomes too mundane.....We fear ecstasy because it is too demanding, requires too much discipline, too much surrender. Occasionally we touch it - through meditation, dance, celebration and ritual and we are lit up, we become truly alive. Then we return to the solid world and die again." Theolyn Cortens.

I have been thinking a lot about being fully present to enjoy each moment of our lives as they are so short. So often there are amazing things to notice, like last night's super moon or the rays of sun shining through the dark clouds as I walked Aden to school this morning or even the sparkly fake perfect world of Eastgardens when I went there yesterday with Martin to buy him a new pair of school shoes. And I never thought I'd notice that!

Also trying to enjoy, or perhaps it would be better to say fully experience, the moments that are difficult because they are uniquely our experience of the world in that moment. They only exist through our conscious experience of them and maybe if we keep looking away at these times or immediately seeking escape then we will have to go back to the same place again and again until we see them clearly. Maybe......

But that's not so easy especially when we are in the truly challenging times of our lives. It does seem true however that we need to learn to accept painful feelings and in doing so, a tiny bit of the pain disappears, the pain of rejection of what is.

That might do for now.

Much love, K.xxx
