The kindness of others

Just talking to a lady in the street who reminded me of the kindness of others. Not that I really needed reminding because it is what I was talking about last night in a class I taught but then again it is easy not to notice. It is easy to forget how much we rely on others for so many things. In particular we often fail to notice when people close to us do something that helps us. We take people for granted, especially those we spend a lot of time with.

Anyway, Isabelle was telling me how her and her husband (a retired couple) were taking a winding road out to Bilpin when they blew a front tyre. They were not able to stop immediately on the narrow mountain road so drove on quite stressed and worried. When they could stop and phone the NRMA they did so but while they were waiting for help a man came to offer assistance. He was tattooed and had a nose ring so put them a little out of their comfort zone. Of course, he was a lovely man who changed their tyre and got them back on the road quickly. It was nice to hear my friend in the street say how wonderful people are, how many kind people there are around.

We tend to get a bit caught up in the negative news but if we look around with open eyes and an open heart, we do see the opposite. It is very refreshing to stop noticing the faults of others and instead to focus on their good qualities. It also gives people the chance to show those wonderful qualities. We know this from our own perspective, it feels good to be appreciated and noticed for something positive. It makes us glow with goodness.

This is not an ordinary viewpoint. Often our pride gets in the way of noticing the kindness of others because we are so busy thinking about how hard we work and all the stuff we do. It is an extraordinary point of view and a simple exercise of noticing and showing gratitude which has the immediate effect of making others happy and ourselves as well. Win, win.

Thanks for your kindness in reading my post today.

Sending love to you, yes you, K.
