Simplicity

Hello,

Walking Aden to school this morning was wonderful. It is wonderful every day. We both love it. I told him this morning that I will miss walking him to school when he starts going on his own and he said that we can still walk together in the mornings and he'll walk home with his mates. How kind. Then he thought about high school and how he will probably get the bus and our morning walks will be over but we decided we still have a couple of years before then so put that thought aside. We also decided that we can still take walks together in years to come and Aden wants to do our same walk to school but then loop around past the beach and home again. Sounds good to me.

Marty who does get the bus to high school sometimes tells us that he misses our walks. What is it that is special about walking together to and from school? Nothing really which is probably the point. It's quite a pleasant walk through two parks and along a couple of nice streets with a view of the ocean for some of the way. It's become tradition to say, "I can see the ocean," as soon as we can a few streets from our place. Just noticing something simple, something special. We notice the colour of the sea changing with the weather, the seasons. We can see the headland and boats, rocks.

But we also notice closer things. The other day we watched as a group of ants tried to pull a worm into their mound. There were several ants on his tail but the worm kept flicking them off and sliding away and they would race up and try to grab on again. We thought about intervening to save the worm but decided to let nature take its course and we also needed to get to school.

We hold hands a lot of the way. Aden is a real hand holder which is so sweet and I never fail to absorb the feeling of his hand reaching for mine, his hand in mine.

We stop and say hello to the rabbit who lives down our street called Diamond Princess. She sometimes jumps up to the fence and Aden rubs noses with her through the gaps.

We wave to neighbours, we smell roses (really, there's a rose garden in someone's front yard and at certain times they are all in bloom), we chat, we feel the sun, the wind or the rain, we run if we're late and we kiss at the gate.

Sometimes I want to bottle those morning walking moments so I try to soak them up in my memory.

It's fifteen minutes of simplicity at the start of the day and it is precious.

Love to all, K.xxxx
